Alexa Ray Joel, the daughter of the singer Billy Joel and the model Christie Brinkley, was admitted to a Manhattan hospital on Saturday after swallowing an unknown number of pills following a breakup with her boyfriend, a law enforcement official said.
Ms. Joel’s roommate called 911 about 12:20 p.m. to report an “emotionally disturbed person” was “having trouble breathing” at her West Village apartment, the official said. The authorities did not know what type of pills she swallowed or whether she took them accidentally or on purpose, the official said.
Ms. Joel, 23, was taken to St. Vincent’s Hospital Manhattan, where she was listed in stable condition. Ms. Brinkley was with her.
Ms. Joel’s publicist, Claire Mercuri, would not discuss her client’s treatment or the reasons for her hospital stay. “Her doctors are assessing her needs,” Ms. Mercuri said. Ms. Joel, whose parents divorced in 1994, has embarked on a music career of her own, releasing an album, “Sketches,” on her own label in 2006.
“For the most part, I call what I’m doing ‘pop/soul blues’ with a little bit of jazz,” she says in a biography on her MySpace page. “It’s a classic pop style very influenced by my father, Ray Charles, Norah Jones and Billie Holiday.”
Ms. Joel had two performances scheduled for Dec. 10 in New York City, including at the New York Stock Exchange’s Christmas tree lighting ceremony.
